What is a crossover car?

A crossover car is one which mixes two body styles. Traditionally, a crossover car has the price tag and the practicality of a hatchback with the styling of an SUV. Crossovers tend to be larger than hatchbacks with a higher ride height and ease of access just like an SUV. They tend to have a smaller, more economical engine like you would see in your average hatchback. A crossover car is a great option if you want something which is cheap to run but large enough for the family.

1. MINI Countryman.

The MINI Countryman is a perfect example of a crossover car. The MINI has been well-loved by UK drivers for many years but for many, they are too small for everyday driving. So, let us introduce you to the MINI Countryman. It’s a 5-door model which offers superb ride quality and comfort. Not only that but there are also lots of options to choose from, there are 2 types of petrol engine, a powerful plug-in hybrid and an impressive all-electric model too. The MINI Countryman is really versatile and it’s even featured on our list of the best cars for driving in the snow

2. Citroen C3 Cactus.

The Citroen C3 Cactus may not be to everyone’s taste but we like the funky styling of this model. Did you know the distinctive air bump design on the side panels is there to protect your car from wayward trolleys and car doors? The Citroen C3 Cactus offers a low starting price and used model deals can be even better value for money! It’s a crossover car which is cheap to run and comfortable to drive.  On the inside, there’s plenty of room throughout and sofa-like seats in the back.

3. BMW X1.

If you’re after a luxury crossover car, the BMW X1 is definitely worth looking at. There’s a range of engines to choose from, including, petrol diesel and plug-in hybrid options. The interior is very high quality and it’s reflected on the exterior too. The BMW X1 offers sharp handling and grips the road well. As a family car, the BMW X1 can offer a wide interior body and a large boot space to handle whatever life brings.

4. Dacia Duster.

We’ve featured the Dacia Duster many times on our blog, from the best cars for camping to cars for dog owners, the Dacia Duster is so versatile. Not only that but it’s one of the best value for many cars you can buy. Granted, the Duster doesn’t have the most exciting interior and can feel a bit cheap, but it’s still worth a look. It’s one of the cheapest crossovers you can buy from new, with a starting price of around £17k. Even the standard spec comes with a decent range of features and frugal engines.

5. Toyota Yaris Cross.

The Toyota Yaris has long been a popular car for beginners and it’s easy to see why. Toyota has built on this reputation and brought the Toyota Yaris Cross to life. The Cross comes with a nippy hybrid powertrain and the capability of an SUV. On the road, it’s light and easy to drive. You’ll have no issues slipping into those tight parking spaces or dotting around town. The Yaris Cross takes everything that drivers love about the Yaris and simply makes it bigger!

6. Volkswagen T-Cross.

Comfortable, roomy and cheap to run – say hello to the Volkswagen T-Cross! The VW T-Cross’ square body offers lots of space in both the front and back without being too bulky. You’ll be confident driving at higher speeds thanks to its weight distribution and light steering. From new, the T-cross comes with some great features on the inside such as the impressive 8-inch infotainment display and smart phone connectivity.

7. Audi Q3.

Another SUV crossover car that oozes luxury is the Audi Q3. The Q3 is a good-looking car with plenty to offer. The plug-in hybrid model is worth a look but the petrol engine is perfect for city driving. It comes with a range of great features such as powerful LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors. The Audi Q3 is spacious and comfortable and has Audi’s well-loved style and sophistication throughout.

8. Ford Puma.

Last but not least, the Ford Puma is the epitome of crossover cars to buy. It was also the best-selling car of 2023 so we feel like there is little more to say. Its body style is the perfect mix of a small body with lots of interior space. The design makes the Puma easy to access and even the boot space is generous too. There’s also an extra 80L storage tucked away in the boot in the form of a ‘Megabox’! This model meets Euro 6 standards and offers low emissions.
